Adoc Talent Management is looking for a Chief Scientific Officer for one of our client, an emerging biotech developing the next generation of immune checkpoint modulators. Following the completion of a recent major financing round, the company develops a highly-differentiated & diversified portfolio of first -in-class therapeutic antibodies in cancers and auto-immunity.


Poste : 

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the Executive Committee, the CSO will provide strong leadership and direction to all of the company’s internal and external research and pre-clinical development activities, up to IND / CTA filing. (S)he will act as a broadly responsible number two to the CEO, leading the formulation of the R&D strategy along with the build-up of an effective R&D organisation. The CSO will implement state-of-the art processes for all levels of activities from discovery research through early clinical development. (S)he will also contribute to strategy development and decision making in relation to company-wide issues. 
In order to lead the way in the hyper-competitive immuno-oncology landscape, the CSO must provide sound understanding of immuno-oncology target biology, pharmacology, clinical positioning, future market needs, and regulatory challenges in order to ensure the right go/no go decisions and prioritisation of resource. The CSO will assume leadership for a team of highly-experienced senior scientists, who will in turn, manage small teams of Engineers. As a key leader, the CSO serves as a role model for creative problem solving, focused execution, and a behaviour that promotes teamwork and collaboration.  

Missions include:

  • Align, structure, motivate and lead the R&D organisation to deliver on R&D and IP strategies.
  • Direct the implementation of R&D processes including implementation of IT systems to support research documentation (data, protocols, reports, patent applications).
  • Represent the overall R&D perspective where needed in investor presentations, Board meetings and with business and financial partners.
  • Maintain current awareness of developments and competitor activity in the scientific and medical fields relevant to the company.
  • Participate in Business Development activities, providing scientific input into discussions with potential pharma partners.
  • Play a key role in alliance management, working with pharma partners to set the strategic direction, and oversee the delivery of joint projects.
Profil : 

MD, DVM and/or PhD in relevant translational medicine fields, i.e., immune-oncology and/or immunology and possibly infectious diseases with a proven track record in drug discovery and development on antibodies (lead identification, engineering, cell line development, and regulatory development of antibodies).

A scientifically or medically qualified professional having successfully developed complex assets in the immunooncology / oncology therapy area and having a broad drug development experience, particularly with affinity/experience with novel/complex products.

The successful candidate must have industry exposure and ideally will hold experience of working with both established and emerging organisations, ideally combining a mix of large company best practices and smaller company adaptability and experience.

Good understanding of the process and requirements to take assets end to end through pre-clinical development and into the clinic.  

Sound understanding of clinical and regulatory pathways for drug development and of the potential needs of development partners; able to both develop and implement appropriate strategies; and to identify the most efficient and cost-effective development pathway to achieve the company’s objectives. 
As a strong leader and accomplished people manager, the CSO should have gravitas and self-confidence and should not be afraid to voice his/her position within internal management/strategic discussions.

An excellent communicator with the confidence and professional competence to win respect and gain credibility at all levels within and outside the company; capable of representing the company externally in the scientific, clinical and investment communities and with potential partners.  

Outstanding organisational skills, project leadership capability, and a self-motivated. Driver of best practice and process in the management of clinical development.

Well-developed strategic thinking skills.

A passion for the oncology / immuno-oncology / auto-immune disease areas.

A strong team player, open to challenge and criticism and equally not afraid to challenge others; flexible, practical, and pragmatic; proactive and willing to take the initiative; and able to integrate rapidly with a small team in an entrepreneurial environment.

Sound commercial skills.

A keen sense of judgment and prioritization: Operates with thoughtful urgency.

Ability to manage complex and multiple projects.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. French language skills will be an advantage.

Willingness to travel. 


The company is currently located in one of the leading cancer centers in Europe allowing a “from patients to patients” on-site approach incl. all the capabilities to perform translational research. Marseille, second largest city in France, offers a pleasant life style for executives, with an active cultural life and a foot in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.  Salary (fix + bonus + equity) is negotiable depending upon profile and experience.
